Tottenham shut down Manchester United questions to Pochettino

Tottenham refused to allow questions about Mauricio Pochettino being linked to the Manchester United manager s job at a news conference on Thursday.

Pochettino has been tipped as the leading candidate to permanently replace Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed on an interim basis following the Portuguese s departure.

The Argentinian manager insisted his sole focus was on Spurs when he faced the media on Tuesday and the club were unwilling to allow him to field similar questions ahead of Sunday s Premier League clash at Everton.

When a Sky Sports reporter attempted to ask a question relating to comments made by Les Reed, who was technical director at Southampton when Pochettino left the club for Tottenham in 2014, he was met with a sw…

Aguero will be at Manchester City next season – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola insisted Sergio Aguero will be a Manchester City player next term after the striker concluded a prolific season with a brace in the 5-0 Premier League win over Watford.

Aguero moved on to 33 goals for the campaign in all competitions at Vicarage Road – his most prolific since joining City in 2011 – as Guardiola s men secured third place and automatic progress to the Champions League group stages in style.

Guardiola lavished praise on Aguero s all-action showing in Tuesday night s 3-1 victory at home to West Brom, although his appraisals of the Argentina striker have often veered closer to constructive criticism in his first season at the helm.

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus in January briefly saw Aguero demoted to the bench but the forward duo c…

Rafinha: I´ve never spoken to Germany

Bayern Munich defender Rafinha denied suggestions he wanted to play for Germany after rejecting a Brazil call-up.

The right-back was initially included in Dunga s squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, but he withdrew – wishing not to be considered.

It led to suggestions the 30-year-old could be moving to play for world champions Germany, as he is seeking citizenship in the European country.

But Rafinha said his decision was purely down to not being a Brazil regular and he denied ever having contact with the German Football Association (DFB).

I am here to clarify something to you, who agree and disagree with my decision, he wrote on Twitter.

Everyone has the right to think and interpret it the way seem fit

I asked to be released fro…

Ramos not following Pique into Spain retirement

Joint Group G leaders Spain and Italy are locked together on 16 points, but with only top spot guaranteeing a place at the World Cup the nation that finishes second faces a play-off to qualify.

And Ramos called for Spain supporters to get behind his side and avoid whistling Pique, who has been targeted by fans in the past.

What we re concerned about is that there s a place at the World Cup at stake and, above all, it s at a grand stadium like the Santiago Bernabeu, he said.

This is one of the best fixtures you could watch. I am sure the supporters will be our greatest ally. They will help us.

Pique has been an exemplary player for the Spanish national team. Whistles don t help anybody.

A manager of Manchester is coming – Allegri mischievously drops Guardiola hint

Massimiliano Allegri has claimed his Juventus successor will be a manager of Manchester amid speculation linking Pep Guardiola with a shock move to Turin.

On Thursday, Italian news agency AGI reported Manchester City boss Guardiola had agreed a four-year contract worth €24million annually to take over at Serie A champions Juve, claiming the deal will be announced on June 4 before a presentation 10 days later.

Speaking before City completed an unprecedented domestic treble by hammering Watford 6-0 in last weekend s FA Cup final, Guardiola insisted he had no intention of moving to Juventus and club board member Alberto Galassi told Sky Italia the renewed reports were a load of nonsense .

However, Allegri made a mischievous contribution to the saga when he attende…

Barcelona´s Vermaelen recovers from calf injury

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has recovered from his latest injury setback, the club have announced.

The Belgian has not featured since Barca s 1-0 LaLiga win over Real Valladolid on February 16 after sustaining what the club described as a muscle overload injury to the calf.

The 33-year-old was not named in Ernesto Valverde s squad for the trip to Real Betis on Sunday, but he could be in contention for the visit of local rivals Espanyol after the international break on March 30.

Vermaelen has endured woeful luck with injuries in his career, missing lengthy periods at Arsenal due to fitness problems.

The issues continued after his move to Barca in 2014, robbing him of the chance of being consistently available for selection, particularly in his firs…

Portugal, Spain favourites but Santos wary of Morocco and Iran

Fernando Santos acknowledged European champions Portugal and 2010 World Cup winners Spain assume favouritism in Group B, though he refused to underestimate Morocco and Iran.

Portugal and neighbouring Spain will go head-to-head at the World Cup in Russia next year, along with Morocco and Iran following Friday s draw.

Cristiano Ronaldo s Portugal – who claimed Euro 2016 – and Spain headline the group but Santos is wary of Morocco and Iran, who made it through their respective CAF and AFC qualifying campaigns undefeated.

It s a very deceptive and treacherous group. Portugal have to accept that we are one of the favourites but if you look in a bit more detail, you can see it s very difficult, Santos said.

Spain are naturally favourites, as I ve always s…

Seaman: ´Phenomenal achievement´ if Emery´s Arsenal win Europa League

Unai Emery may have already won three Europa League titles with Sevilla, but David Seaman insists it would be a phenomenal achievement if the Spaniard were to lead Arsenal to success in this year s tournament.

The Gunners host Napoli on Thursday in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, the winner advancing to a last-four clash against either Villarreal or Valencia.

Emery knows those two Spanish clubs well from his time in charge of Sevilla, with whom he won the Europa League in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Seaman acknowledged that those successive triumphs were impressive, but believes winning the competition in his first year as Arsene Wenger s successor in north London would be a similarly significant feat.

Seaman, who was sp…
